Tech, faith teams around region Mass amid coronavirus crisis

“Being able to bring the celebration of the Eucharist and the Word of God directly to our community of faith is a great blessing,” said Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez. “Our Catholic community is doing our part to limit the spread of this global public health threat by suspending Masses at all parishes for the first time in the history of our Archdiocese. Even though we cannot publicly gather in communion to celebrate our faith together during these difficult times, I encourage our faithful to continue to participate in the Holy Mass via television, radio and online so that we may continue to pray together for the Lord’s grace and mercy in our time of need.”

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles made accomodations for Spanish-speaking churchgoers, and for parishioners without internet or cable access, through a special partnership Los Angeles News with Univision’s local UniMas KFTR-TV, Channel 46, Monday-Friday and Sunday at 7 a.m.



In Orange County, Most Rev. Kevin Vann, Bishop of Orange, celebrated Mass on Sunday in an empty Christ Cathedral, with the service live-streamed on ChristCathedralMass.com.

Scores of individual churches in both counties live to cast their local services, too or placed recorded ceremonies on their websites and social media. When the Archbishop issued his invitation, the team at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena was prepared — they’ve already been broadcasting their Mass for more than 30 years.

Three decades ago, a teenager with a bit of young foresight encouraged Holy Family Church to begin recording their Sunday mass to be broadcast on TV.

As a result, the church started Holy Family Productions, and they’ve been recording their service ever since. According to their producer, they switched to live streaming about 10 years ago, and any parishioner who would like may watch their live stream via their social media.
