Atal Tinkering Labs benefiting students.
The central government plans to establish Atal Tinkering Labs in 50,000 government schools over the next five years, aiming to enhance STEM skills among students. The initiative, part of the Atal Innovation Mission by NITI Aayog, focuses on teaching creativity, problem-solving, robotics, coding, and more. This move is expected to boost India’s startup ecosystem and future growth in Make in India and Digital India sectors.

The central government is set to overhaul the education system and bring in new reforms. In this context, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the recently presented budget, discussed the Atal Tinkering Labs initiative. She announced plans to establish Atal Tinkering Labs in 50,000 government schools across the country over the next five years. As part of this initiative, rural students will be taught creativity, problem-solving skills, and application-based learning, with a focus on transforming traditional education methods.
Atal Tinkering Labs have been designed by NITI Aayog, a central government organization, under the Atal Innovation Mission. The main goal of these labs is to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) skills among school students. They will provide training in various fields such as electronics with DIY kits, Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, robotics, coding skills, artificial intelligence, and mentoring programs with experts from academia and industry. The initiative will also focus on fostering creativity through challenges and competitions.
In line with the vision of promoting India's startup ecosystem, the government aims to raise awareness about startup systems from a young age. By introducing students to technology at the school level, the government believes that this will accelerate the growth of sectors like Make in India and Digital India in the future.
